Legendary plans shooting in Q1 2014

warcraft-movie-news9New info just hit the web…today producer Charles Roven said that Warcraft is currently planned to shoot in early 2014.

“First quarter 2014 we’re going to shoot that movie,” Roven said while discussing Legendary’s plans.

“We’re moving forward; obviously Legendary is making that film and I’m having a great time with Duncan.”

With early 2014 shooting, release 2015 (prolly summer) is still on I think.

So who is Bill Westenhofer? He is two time Academy Award winner for visual effects, Golden Compass and fresh one from last Oscar for Life of Pi. Westenhofer is a visual effects supervisor at Rhythm and Hues Studios and his film career includes large projects such as The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Elf, Men in Black 2, A-Team and more.

Now for real the ball is rolling and that filming start in the end of summer this year and release 2015. seems pretty solid now. Bloody finally 😉

Thomas Tull talks about Warcraft movie

divider-postthomas-tullSo how do you make a good movie based on a video game?  According to Tull, forget that it’s a video game and focus on the story.  He acknowledges that it was much tougher to make movies based on classic games like Pong, but now they have the ability to tell great stories because video game plotlines have vastly improved in the past several years:

“I think first of all is to lose the fact that it’s a videogame movie and just concentrate on do you have a story that’s worth telling? Because if you look back to the 80’s, comic book movies were not anywhere near what they are today. They weren’t given the resources and you didn’t have the level of directors that you have today working on these things. I think with videogames it’s just become much more sophisticated storytelling, hard to do a movie off of Pong, but today when you have stuff like Mass Effect, you have things like Warcraft, you have things like Skyrim where very cool worlds have been created, that’s what we’re attracted to. We took our time with Warcraft because just saying “How many people play the game? Well then that means X number of people will buy a ticket.” That’s a death trap, that’s the surest way to make a crap movie, and that’s not an option. So we took our time wanted to make sure that we used all the canon that’s been built up over years and years by Blizzard.”

Sam Raimi on why he left the WoW movie project

divider-postsam-raimiYou’re no longer attached to the World of Warcraft movie, and now Duncan Jones is making it.

I loved his movie Moon, and I think he’s a strikingly talented director. I bet that if anyone can do a great job with it, it’s him.

What was the biggest obstacle on that project?

Robert Rodat was working on the script, and it was taking a long time. I think they were getting a little antsy at Legendary, the production company. Actually, what happened was even more complicated, so let me go back a little bit. First, they asked me if I wanted to make it, and I said, “Yes, I love World of Warcraft, and I think it would make a great picture.” So I read a screenplay they had that was written by the guys at Blizzard, and it didn’t quite work for me. I told them I wanted to make my own original story with Robert, so we pitched it to Legendary and they accepted it, and then we pitched it to Blizzard, and they had reservations, but they accepted it.

WoW Movie gets a new director

divider-postduncan-jonesIt’s been half a year since last news that was actually about the movie and finally today something worth posting. When Raimi left the director’s chair empty there were speculation who will take the chair next and one name, not very high on the wish list, came up that I actually thought was one of the best to take over –Duncan Jones.

He showed he got the talent with movies Moon and Source Code plus, and that is a big plus, he is a big fan of Warcraft universe. He understands it and for WoW movie project to work, you need to have director who understand the Warcraft lore. Raimi was never fan of the game, they made him play it for a while for PR purpose, but Duncan is a real deal.

Mark Hildebrandt training with Robert Goodwin

divider-postGot some pictures of Mark Hildebrandt practicing sword fighting with Robert Goodwin for his role of Varian Wrynn in WoW movie. The pictures are not too good in quality so I didn’t put the “click for bigger” option 🙂
