WARCRAFT MOVIE - Release date: June 10, 2016 - Director: Duncan Jones

Warcraft movie about two “tribes”

Yes, you have read it good – two tribes. Thomas Tull’s words, not mine 🙂

Crew over at IGN caught Thomas Tull twice  during the Godzilla promotion in London and New York and Tull hinted that we might see something on this years Comic-Con and that the story is focused around two tribes. I think he meant two factions, two races or something like that, but at that moment he couldn’t find the proper and correct word 🙂

“Doing a videogame movie has not really been done well, and I think part of the reason for that is it’s been done for the wrong reasons. If you simply say ‘How many people have played the game? How much money can we make?’ You’re doomed. You’re doomed right off the start.”

“Bringing a filmmaker like Duncan [Jones] onboard to distill that and bring the incredible cast onboard that he was able to get… we hope that when you see the first trailer for it, you’re going to say ‘OK, this is not what I was expecting.’ He’s an incredibly exciting filmmaker.”

Or you can just check out the video…

Thomas Tull about Warcraft release date

Crew from CraveOnline had a chat with Legendary Pictures CEO Thomas Tull about various projects they are working on at this moment and few questions were about Warcraft movie also.

CraveOnline: I understand Warcraft wraps shooting shortly but doesn’t come out until 2016. Is two years of post longer than usual?

Thomas Tull: Well, part of it is getting the date right. As you may have noticed, these next two years, there’s pretty big titles coming out. We wanted to make sure that we got that right, but there are some sequences and some things that Duncan Jones has done that are truly on the cutting edge. You want to have plenty of time to make sure that we dial those in. So by the time they get home and set up, it’ll be a little less than two years. It’ll be about 20 months but we really want to take our time and get this right because the technology that’s employed really is some next generation stuff.

CraveOnline: So they’ll use the time.

Thomas Tull: Correct, absolutely.

CraveOnline: Duncan’s last two movies were mind-benders. Is Warcraft more of a straightforward story for him or does it have that element too?

Thomas Tull: I would say it’s a linear story, but at the same time, it’s Duncan Jones. That’s what we wanted, was again that different flare, not just straightforward fantasy and everything. Look, it’s a privilege. Being able to go from Interstellar’s our fifth movie with Chris Nolan into Guillermo del Toro and Gareth Edwards and now Duncan Jones. It’s really a privilege to work around these folks.

Duncan Jones on first set image

divider-postwarcraft-movie-news13divider-postEmpire Magazine for its 300th issue has an article about Warcraft movie and with it we finally got a first image from Warcraft movie set. It’s not something huge as you can notice, but at least we can see that they are using built sets and not green screen, which is always a plus 🙂

Warcraft movie set - Duncan Jones

Warcraft vs. Mass Effect Adaptation

Duncan Jones said on his Twitter that shooting is half way done, so 45 day more. There was some media at the set also, just they have to keep quiet for the moment since it seems there is a NDA on every bit of information from the set. Kinda sucks, even though with other Blizzard properties it’s usually like that, except there was always some datamining so things got out ahead of time. It would be pretty hard to datamine a movie production….ahh well 🙂

Anyway, IGN had a chat with Legendary CEO Thomas Tull about their hot game movie rights, Warcraft and Mass Effect. Here is a part of the interview…

IGN: Given the expansive nature of World of Warcraft, what was the key for you guys in coming up with a story structure that worked as a film? I know a lot of people struggled with that for a long time.

Tull: Oh, yeah. That’s great. So here’s what that boils down to: At Legendary, if our logo’s on it, we want it to be great, not just an okay way to spend two hours. So with Warcraft, the reason it took so long to develop is because the world does not need another bad video game movie.

IGN: Yup.

Tull: Frankly, our attitude from the beginning — we have an amazing relationship with the guys at Blizzard, and they care very much about their universe as storytellers — if it were just the game, we would not have known how to make Warcraft, which is a video game experience, into a movie. But, because they’ve done such an incredible job of building out the lore — they have something like a hundred books — there’s a real story and deep history behind the characters and races and everything. So that’s really what we mined and got into. Like, what are some of the main characters that make this such an interesting universe, and what are the stories that we want to tell? We were finally able to get a script and story that we felt was incredibly compelling, and that’s how we’re able to get a director like Duncan Jones.

Dominic Cooper talks about Warcraft role

While doing interview for Collider about his latest projects like Need for Speed, he was asked about his Warcraft role and was it the game or the director Duncan Jones that brought him to the Warcraft movie set?

Yeah, it was Duncan Jones. I knew very little of the game, so the storyline within the script was just completely crazy, but exciting. Coincidentally, it was another big idea of a game, but I knew very little of the game.

Then he was asked how would he describe the world of Azeroth?

Still no Warcraft movie info from set

Unfortunately the thing I hope won’t happened is pretty much happening and that is lack of any information, pictures from movie set or interviews from crew on what’s going on. It’s been weeks since the shooting started and Duncan Jones on his twitter sometimes drop a line about how sets are awesome, but that’s about it. Not really a great way to slowly raise the hype for the movie we have been waiting for so long. Only thing so far that was shown also came from Duncan on his twitter and that is this picture…

warcraft-movie-image1You can see a brainstorming VFX crew with Bill Westenhoffer & Duncan Jones….and a good looking sandwich on the table 🙂

I don’t know, maybe it’s still too early for showing us some set pictures, but I hope they will not leave us in dark during the whole filming…that would be simply rude from Legendary and Blizzard.

Warcraft movie starts filming

And so it begins…

Two days ago Duncan Jones posted on his Twitter this

Now, he didn’t mentioned anywhere it’s Warcraft movie, but since they announced previous that filming will start late January 2014 and the fact Duncan Jones is not directing three movies in the same time we can be 100% sure he meant Warcraft movie starts shooting…..at least I hope so 🙂
