Finally after so many BlizzCons we get more than few sentences about movie. We got an hour of talking about the movie. Even they say they did something similar 3 years ago, I guess my memory of that event is pritty dim. Anyway, on the panel the talkers were Duncan Jones, Chris Metzen, Bill Westenhoffer and Nick Carpenter. You can watch the full Warcraft movie panel here.
They said right in the start that they really don’t have too much to share since marketing haven’t started yet and hell not even filming that will start in January. So it was more of a chit chat between the guys on panel and their backgrounds and what they want to do with movie. Both Duncan and Bill are long time Warcraft players and are very passionate about the project. Duncan expressed his interest while still Raimi was in the picture. Later he got his chance, he read the current script and decided it too much Alliance and that story need to be told from both sides and from the start – The First War. The movie will be live action plus CGI and to my surprise, Orc will be played by real actors cause they want to make them as believable as possible. Bill said that they have a great team at ILM (Industrial Light & Magic) that is working on the Orcs. They aim for gritty style with Avatar & Game of Throne mix.
Blizzard has made schedule for the upcoming BlizzCon in November. After so many past Blizzcons where we maybe heard a sentence or two about movie or sometimes not even that, now there is a panel made just for the movie. Seems perfectly logical in terms of Blizzard comprehension of time. The time for panel is set on second day of convention on Saturday, 9th November 1-2 pm time. If anyone from the readers is going, I of course expect some images 😉
Announcement states – “Please join the Warcraft movie director, Duncan Jones, along with key Blizzard developers as they discuss the thrilling collaborative process of translating Azeroth’s game world to the big screen.”
When discussing the movie, Metzen says that they are still meeting with director Sam Raimi about putting ideas together on “what kind of story we want to tell, what do we want people to feel, what is the best way to look at this big franchise.” It seems like a lot of thought process is going into the WoW movie, but yet nothing has yet be decided upon.
Metzen talks about the conflict of how to go about making the movie remain true to the games but that the core experience would still remain on the game side. By saying “Oh, I get it that matches my expectations when I played”, Metzen wants fans to gain a certain feel from the movie through camera angles and other aspects that remind them of actually playing the game. The movie is still far from production and hopefully once the Hollywood side of production gets going the movie will become a real reality and that it won’t just become a big hyped up blockbuster failure.
GameSpy:You’ve just made the big announcement that Sam Raimi will be directing the Warcraft movie. You’re co-producing, so what are your thoughts on the announcement?
Chris Metzen, Vice President of Creative Development, Blizzard Entertainment:We’re all very, very excited about the announcement. We waited a long time to announce a director. We’ve been with Legendary for a number of years and we’ve jammed a lot of ideas, and we’ve waited for the right personalities, the right chemistry to come together. We’re really, really stoked that it finally has. It’s pretty surreal that we’ve finally made the announcement. It’s finally like, “It’s on, it’s official, here we go.” We’re just stoked to get it going and see this thing starting to take shape.
GameSpy: Was Sam Raimi one of the originally targeted directors?
