Sam Raimi on why he left the WoW movie project

divider-postsam-raimiYou’re no longer attached to the World of Warcraft movie, and now Duncan Jones is making it.

I loved his movie Moon, and I think he’s a strikingly talented director. I bet that if anyone can do a great job with it, it’s him.

What was the biggest obstacle on that project?

Robert Rodat was working on the script, and it was taking a long time. I think they were getting a little antsy at Legendary, the production company. Actually, what happened was even more complicated, so let me go back a little bit. First, they asked me if I wanted to make it, and I said, “Yes, I love World of Warcraft, and I think it would make a great picture.” So I read a screenplay they had that was written by the guys at Blizzard, and it didn’t quite work for me. I told them I wanted to make my own original story with Robert, so we pitched it to Legendary and they accepted it, and then we pitched it to Blizzard, and they had reservations, but they accepted it.

Raimi no more

divider-postsam-raimiAfter many months of no information that is directly connected with Warcraft movie production, finally something. It seems that Sam Raimi is not directing WoW movie anymore. Even though there wasnt any offical statement from Legendary Pictures about change in director, if there is a smoke, there must be a fire somewhere also 🙂

After Sam Raimi’s press conference for the Oz: The Great and Powerful at San Diego Comic-Con, CraveOnline was able to go right up to Raimi for a follow-up question.

“Actually, they don’t have me directing World of Warcraft anymore because when I took the Oz job, they had to move on to another director,” Raimi said. “They had to start making it.”

Warcraft movie wants James Cameron

divider-postIt has been suggested that those involved with turning the hit online game World Of Warcraft into a movie are eager to get Avatar director James Cameron involved with the project. However, Cameron joining the World Of Warcraft movie project does not look very likely.

James Cameron already has two Avatar sequels lined up for the coming years and there is also the possibility of him producing Terminator 5. There is no doubting that a James Cameron directed World Of Warcraft film would be a huge success but it doesn’t seem that he could find the time.

Warcraft movie put aside?

divider-postSam Raimi had a few decisions to make this year, thanks to a Spider-Man movie franchise reboot that raised questions about whether or not his “WarCraft” movie would become his new priority. It looks like Disney’s “Oz: The Great and Powerful” won out in the end, however, meaning “WarCraft” won’t be getting his full attention in the new year.

Raimi committed to doing “Oz” next and starting production sometime in 2011, according to a Deadline report. Oddly enough, Raimi hooked up with the new movie after Guillermo del Toro declined to direct it. Meanwhile, del Toro has been looking for new video game projects to work on rather than leaving old ones behind.

Warcraft must wait for Oz

warcraft-movie-news2Sam Raimi has left the Daily Bugle, and the road before him has offered several different paths — including one that is made up of yellow brick. And now it looks like the director has chosen which direction he’ll be heading in.

Last week word came that Raimi was in talks to take on Oz: The Great and Powerful, the Wizard of Oz prequel that’s happening at Disney — and this despite his also being signed to direct the World of Warcraft game adaption for Legendary Pictures. Well, it looks like the latter is going to have to wait a while longer, for Deadline has confirmed that Raimi signed on the dotted line last night to make the 3D Oz.

The hope, of course, for Disney is that this picture will result in an Alice in Wonderland-like success. Which is possible, one supposes, especially considering that Robert Downey Jr. is circling the project (though he’s not confirmed as of yet). He’d play the title character, no doubt with a twinkle in his eye (and Dorothy in the backseat of his circus caravan, perhaps?).
