Legendary Pictures & Thomas Tull at press roundtables

divider-postwarcraft-movie-news1divider-postio9.com asked him one question about Warcraft Movie: “How do you make a video game movie that doesn’t suck?” He responded:

“You start with that exact question… I think, as a gamer myself, a lot of times what has happened in the past is, studios have said, ‘How many people play that game? Okay, then that means they’ll probably all go and buy tickets.’ That is an incredibly poor way to make a movie.

So for us, it’s [like], We don’t know how to make a movie out of Warcraft, the video game. [Instead], it’s the incredible story, and the war, and these races, and everything these guys at Blizzard [Entertainment] have come up with. They have 100 books, and just this incredibly rich world that they’ve created.

Thomas Tull talks about Warcraft movie

divider-postthomas-tullSo how do you make a good movie based on a video game?  According to Tull, forget that it’s a video game and focus on the story.  He acknowledges that it was much tougher to make movies based on classic games like Pong, but now they have the ability to tell great stories because video game plotlines have vastly improved in the past several years:

“I think first of all is to lose the fact that it’s a videogame movie and just concentrate on do you have a story that’s worth telling? Because if you look back to the 80’s, comic book movies were not anywhere near what they are today. They weren’t given the resources and you didn’t have the level of directors that you have today working on these things. I think with videogames it’s just become much more sophisticated storytelling, hard to do a movie off of Pong, but today when you have stuff like Mass Effect, you have things like Warcraft, you have things like Skyrim where very cool worlds have been created, that’s what we’re attracted to. We took our time with Warcraft because just saying “How many people play the game? Well then that means X number of people will buy a ticket.” That’s a death trap, that’s the surest way to make a crap movie, and that’s not an option. So we took our time wanted to make sure that we used all the canon that’s been built up over years and years by Blizzard.”

Sam Raimi on why he left the WoW movie project

divider-postsam-raimiYou’re no longer attached to the World of Warcraft movie, and now Duncan Jones is making it.

I loved his movie Moon, and I think he’s a strikingly talented director. I bet that if anyone can do a great job with it, it’s him.

What was the biggest obstacle on that project?

Robert Rodat was working on the script, and it was taking a long time. I think they were getting a little antsy at Legendary, the production company. Actually, what happened was even more complicated, so let me go back a little bit. First, they asked me if I wanted to make it, and I said, “Yes, I love World of Warcraft, and I think it would make a great picture.” So I read a screenplay they had that was written by the guys at Blizzard, and it didn’t quite work for me. I told them I wanted to make my own original story with Robert, so we pitched it to Legendary and they accepted it, and then we pitched it to Blizzard, and they had reservations, but they accepted it.

Thomas Tull discusses film’s progress

divider-postSpeaking at the Hollywood and Game summit keynote, Thomas Tull (Legendary Pictures Chairman) gave some new information regarding the Warcraft live action movie, ensuring everyone that the movie will be dealt with as necessary.

He begins, “We’re doing World of Warcraft, and making it into a movie. I have very strong feelings — from the movie side — that making movies based on games just because they sold well is a really bad idea. There’ve been some like that that weren’t up to snuff just out of the gate. It doesn’t matter to us if it’s based on a graphic novel like [Frank Miller’s] 300, or a TV show – if there’s a great universe and story, that’s what’s interesting to us.

In the following Question and Answer session Tull stated that Legendary and Blizzard are working very closely together to get the storyline perfect by pinpointing what makes up the essence of the Warcraft universe:
